Walking Shapes creates dizzying love letter to New York with “Woah Tiger” Video — Premiering on BULLETT today here.
“Woah Tiger” is available now on iTunes, here.
Shot entirely on 8mm film, “Woah Tiger” is a teaser clip for Taka Come On, a full-length “visual album” of sorts created by New York up-and-comers Walking Shapes. The album, recorded with Gus Oberg (The Strokes), is a fierce and eclectic ode to New York City, a city that needs no qualifiers when it comes to legend-making art. Featuring Nathaniel Hoho on vocals and guitar; Jesse Kotansky on guitar, violin, vocals ; Jake Generalli on keys, vocals; Dan Krysa on bass and vocals; and Christopher Heinz on drums, Walking Shapes meld driving guitars, intricate arrangements and visually evocative songwriting into stunning audio refractions on New York’s sonic landscape. The album will be accompanied by an album-length video from which “Woah Tiger” is taken.
Musically, Woah Tiger” sets the tone for Taka Come On – fast paced, slightly grimy and sexy – with Hoho’s soaring falsetto riding a sonically churning wave, evolving into a primal scream as the verse hits the chorus. Visually, director Adam Erick Wallace tracks the band roaming — or are they raging? — through their favorite Brooklyn and Manhattan haunts, capturing glimpses of their life on and off the stage, including a residency at Baby’s All Right, the first residency EVER at what has now become THE Brooklyn venue du jour.
If “Woah Tiger” walks a similar path to My Morning Jacket’s Evil Urges, the album itself is so versatile, yet concise, that the band’s influences are hard to pinpoint. While an extensive guitar solo wouldn’t be out of place on a REO Speedwagon record, the organized chaos of a song like “Winter Fell” could be the bastard child of Syd Barrett’s post-Pink Floyd albums and Kings of Leon’s Because Of The Times. Yet ultimately Walking Shapes craft catchy pop songs, such as driven “The Right Time” or the powerful ballad “Find Me.”
Stay tuned for the full-length video accompanying Taka Come On, and don’t miss Walking Shapes riveting live show when they play near you!
