Real, the new album from Moscow-based band Pompeya will be released May 5 via No Shame. Real follows the band’s 2014 Night EP, which received immediate critical buzz, and their 2013 debut LP Tropical. SPIN hailed Night as “shimmering…upbeat, frisky disco”.
As a special preview, the album’s lead single “Liar” is now streaming at Vice’s Noisey blog (click here to view). They had this to say about the track:
“A slinky cut of new wave-ish indie, it’s like an upbeat incarnation of The Cure (sans the white makeup and black hair dye) doing a dance with an updated Duran Duran (sans the mullets and penchant of popped collar pastel trenchcoats). And then, just past the three minute mark, they throw in a damn saxophone. So Rob Lowe in St. Elmo’s Fire. Love this.”

Real was produced by Brian Mctear (Local Natives, War on Drugs, Twin Sister), who also collaborated with the band on the Night EP, and was recorded in Philadelphia, New York City, Savannah, and Orlando—places Pompeya had never been before.
Of the process, the band explains, “Our work from the Tropical era was our interpretation of the music we liked. By mixing new wave, disco and funk, we created music we understood would be sunny, light and fun. It was all recorded in Moscow without much outside help from producers, engineers or lyricists. For the new album, we wanted to create music with a larger message, for a more global audience. We were forced out of our comfort zones, forced to experiment more and discuss serious topics like growing up, loss, fatherhood and staying true to yourself without going crazy. These are the real stories of our lives, and the real sound we want to present. This is Real.”
